Some Canon cartridges contain their own printhead, some are available with or without a separate
printhead. Inkjet printers that fall into the Canon Bubblejet Color (BJC) printer
family may use one type or the other. Most Canon BJC printers are color inkjet printers,
and may use either the BC-02 and BC-05 ink cartridges that contain their own
printheads, or the BCI-21BK or BCI-21C black and color ink tanks that fit into a separate
printhead unit (the BC-21e).
Most Canon inks contain a glycol additive that prevents ink from drying on the printhead. Unlike HP single color cartridges which contain no sponge and rely on negative pressure for delivering ink to the printhead,
many Canon black and color cartridges rely on a sponge to retain ink.
The BCI-21 ink tanks are themselves basically an ink retaining sponge held inside
an outer plastic shell.
Canon cartridges are very easy to refill and reliable. Early Canon cartridges (I mean new cartridges) could only print so many pages at a time before becoming overheated and quit printing. This problem has now been
resolved, however, as with all ink cartridges we urge you to refill your
Canon printer ink cartridges before they run completely dry. Printing
with a dry printer ink cartridge can cause print quality problems.
With use the inside sponge(s) tends to dry and to accept less ink during recharging. Our
instructions show how to revive the sponge when it becomes too dry. Some Canon cartridges (for example BC-60) use both ink and a clear optimizer fluid. Optimizer fluid, as well as ink is supplied with the specific applicable kit.
