The Eternal Highlighter Kit

The EHL kit enables you to re-use your highlighter indefinitely by simply adding specifically formulated bright fluorescent ink to the sponge reservoir inside the body of the highlighter itself.

Bright fluorescent ink highlighters cost $2.00 plus. When using the EHL kit, the cost in ink per recharge is $0.16. You can see the savings.

But there are two additional advantages:

  1. You may have observed that during the last 25% of the life of a standard highlighter, the color begins to fade. You attempt to compensate by pressing harder on the tip or by highlighting twice. Either action, (pressing harder or highlighting twice) tends to disrupt the thought process. To explain. In most cases highlighting is a means to emphasize the importance of the highlighted text, for memorization, for relevance or for understanding. It is an automatic act, almost a conditioned reflex after the mind has determined the ‘highlight worthiness’ of the text. If the highlighting reflex becomes conscious (rather than remaining conditioned), then you deflect some of the mental energy applied to understanding the text to take care of highlighting. Using the EHL eliminates this small but (in the long run) annoying problem.
  2. One bottle of EHL ink keeps 60 empty highlighter shells out of the garbage dump. However small the reduction in waste it is meaningful. Considering that millions of highlighters are sold yearly, you can visualize the potential aggregate reduction in pollution.

How to use the EHL

  • You will have received one 2.35oz bottle of EHL ink, one dispenser (syringe cylinder and needle), one drill starter and a set of (3) screws.
  • Using the drill starter make a hole in the base of the highlighter.
Insert one screw and using any screwdriver gently thread the screw in until the washer attached to the HEX head is flush with the body of the highlighter.
  • Remove the screw.
  • Mount the needle onto the dispenser. Open the EHL ink bottle and extract about 1cc of ink.
  • Insert the needle into the hole made previously. You will feel the resistance of the sponge. Gently advance the needle, turning the cylinder clockwise depending on the resistance encountered in drilling through the sponge. Sponge consistency varies somewhat among highlighters. One inch sponge penetration is more than adequate and accurate length of sponge penetration is not critical.
  • The amount of ink to be delivered to the sponge varies with the characteristics of the sponge and how dry it is. One cc is a standard value that will be adequate in most cases.
  • Remove the needle and re-insert the screw. Do not overtighten.
  • Shake the highlighter for a few seconds to help distribute the ink throughout  the sponge
  • Use the highlighter.

NOTE. If too much ink is delivered, you may find a slight tendency to over-highlight at the beginning and observe some bleed through, depending on the type of paper. This also happens sometimes with brand new highlighters. Simply use the highlighter on non-critical text (apply very little pressure). Or dispose of the excess by running the felt tip on scrap paper to be recycled.
